Balaton Bútor and Planbureau

TILES chair

Balaton Bútor teamed up with Dániel Lakos to create a chair referred to as TILES, a new character built of planes and polygons and becoming fashionable after the turn of the millennium.  The cooperation was conceived to manufacture a new furniture family with a unique character, which is innovative, sophisticated and does not cost a fortune to make.

Manufacturer: Balaton Bútor Kft.

They founded their company in 1896 to process wood coming from the trees of the Bakony Hills, which still serves as the basis of their production. The firm relies heavily on solid wood (beech, oak, birch, ash and walnut) to make furniture and décor for interior design. Their products are available in different corners of the world. In the local market, they tend to work for industrial markets but we can buy their products in retail shops too. They work together with quite a few national and international designers including János Vásárhelyi, Gyula Horváth from the former, as well as Simon Pengelly and Stephan Diez from the latter group.

Designer: Dániel Lakos, Planbureau

The Budapest-based design office, Planbureau, was established by Dániel Lakos in 2009 who obtained his first recognition in Japan in 1999, and his award-winning bookshelf was manufactured by the Conde House in Japan after the award. Lakos received his first design award in 2013 followed by a few national and international appreciations. He has taught design at the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design (MOME) since 2014 and has worked as the chief designer in his studio since 2009. Besides designing buildings, interiors and furniture, his studio has also ventured into designing objects. A toy named Logifaces, manufactured in their own workshop, can be found in the world’s most famous museum shops such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The TILT family of chairs is the first result of their cooperation with Balaton Bútor, started in 2019, a product which received a Design Award earlier this year.
