Gabor Gobi

ABOUT THE BRAND AND THE DESIGNER

For Gabor, creation is a journey of discovery. He is dedicated to designing in harmony with the environment, always allowing the present moment and inherent potential of an object to guide him. This philosophy is echoed in his studio, where the mission is to seamlessly blend eco-consciousness with a passion for design. Crafted items participate in nature’s eternal cycle. Drawing inspiration from upcycling, hygge, wabi-sabi, slow living, degrowth, and related movements, these creations persist, constantly reshaped by both gentle and formidable forces. Gabor leans heavily on natural materials, often employing traditional methods. His range spans furniture to accessories and sculptures, but all pieces share a singular origin: they are reclaimed from waste.

ABOUT THE EXHIBITED OBJECTS

THRONE side table

This bespoke hand carved art object by Gabor Gobi is crafted from a repurposed dining chair and remnants of white marble. This sculptural piece has been enhanced by fire-burning the wood using the Yakisugi technique and is elegantly finished with natural oil and beeswax. Every component of this side table is imbued with history. The materials, sourced from scrapyards, abandoned pieces on city streets, and residues from demolished structures, have been given a new lease on life. The act of breathing new purpose into these repurposed materials is both a profound challenge and a source of joy. The side table belongs to the Melting Collection, a series that seeks to spotlight the urgent narrative of our planet’s accelerated climate change. The prevailing impact of human activities has made phenomena such as melting ice caps and tundras a part of our daily existence. The fusion of wood and marble in this design serves as a call to collective action in defense of our environment.

WILDROSE candle holder

Gabor Gobi hand carved this candle holder with different repurposed wood and remnants of pristine white marble. The pine is enhanced using the traditional Japanese Yakisugi method, transforming and enhancing the material, and it’s then elegantly finished with natural oils and sealed with beeswax. Each component of this candle holder narrates a tale of reclamation. Sourced from scrapyards, rediscovered on city streets, or salvaged from soon-to-be-demolished structures, these materials find a renewed purpose. The melting marble presses into the organic shapes of the scorched wood, as wildly dancing flames rise like wild roses in the spring breeze. A distinguished member of the Melting Collection, this piece is emblematic of a world grappling with the alarming pace of climate change — a narrative largely driven by human endeavors. In its design, the melting of wood and stone emerges as a potent symbol, reminding us of the collective imperative to safeguard our environment.
