Orsolya Horváth

ABOUT THE DESIGNER

The designer straddles the boundaries of contemporary furniture design and art, creating unique, small-batch pieces that balance functionality with artistic expression. Working with metal and textiles, her use of materials and forms is born from a dialogue between craft and innovation.

Orsolya Horváth graduated from the Moholy-Nagy University of Art and Design and later spent her internship in Brussels with a contemporary artist duo, where she was able to explore new perspectives at the interface of furniture design and art. For more than 14 years, she has been working with 3D design, which has become a key part of her creative process. She is inspired by the freedom of creating in virtual space and finds it an exciting challenge to transform digitally imagined forms into real objects 1:1. Her design work has been influenced by the imagery of old, rudimentary 3D models and games - visual elements that often reappear in his work, placing the relationship between digital and physical space in a new context.

"I believe in the importance of unique objects, so I focus on designing and making meticulously crafted, personal pieces of furniture rather than mass-producing them. My work is characterised by experimentation and material exploration in the language of contemporary design - each piece tells a story and creates a new experience in the space."

ABOUT THE EXHIBITED OBJECT

Faith in Strangers

"Faith in Strangers" is a two-person bench that explores the playful duality of trust and human connections. Its design allows two people to sit back-to-back, symbolizing the idea of relying on one another. The seat’s pattern represents two abstracted sitting bones, further reinforcing the concept.

The bench was originally designed in a virtual 3D environment, with the goal of recreating it in the physical world as precisely as possible. Special attention was given to the precision of the joints, ensuring that the weld seams are nearly invisible while maintaining a strong and stable structure.

The choice of materials also reflects this duality: the soft, lightweight seat is handwoven from merino wool and silk fibers, creating a striking contrast with the nearly immovable stainless steel frame. This interplay of fragility and strength, softness and stability, balances functionality with artistic expression.
